The Verge examines whether provenance standards like C2PA and Google’s SynthID watermarking are enough to stem AI-generated content, and where inference-based detection fits in.

Reality Defender CEO Ben Colman argues that leaning entirely on labelling or watermarking assumes malicious AI content is only made with a few specific tools — “which is the absolute wrong assumption.” He adds that platforms “have wholeheartedly embraced deepfakes and AI slop” because, like other inflammatory content, it keeps users engaged and ads flowing.
